IL-07 Candidate Reed Showalter Releases Food Policy Proposal, Launches Week of Community Action
CHICAGO, IL—On Tuesday, IL-07 candidate Reed Showalter released his comprehensive food policy agenda, "Building a Food System that Works for Everyone," outlining several federal reform proposals that will make food more affordable for working families across the district.
Showalter's policy agenda spans the entirety of the food system—from farms to grocery stores—and includes proposals such as:
Creating public grocery stores and expanding public food benefits;
Banning junk fees and surveillance pricing on food delivery;
Strengthening food workers' rights;
Halting consolidation in our nation's food markets; and
Modernizing agricultural practices and law enforcement to create a more affordable and environmentally conscious food system.
Showalter's full policy proposal for making food more affordable, healthier, and more accessible is attached and can be found on his website.
Showalter's release is accompanied by a series of community events and site visits.
On Tuesday, November 18th at 7:30pm, former USDA Public Affairs Manager, Alan Shannon, will host a virtual conversation to discuss Showalter's plans to build fairer and more sustainable food systems. The Zoom link for this event can be found here.
On Wednesday, November 19th, at 1:00pm, Showalter will visit FARMZER0, engaging directly with local leaders working to better urban gardening with a focus on sustainable and accessible produce.
As a part of this week's focus on expanding access to healthy, affordable food for working families, Showalter's campaign has committed to directing campaign volunteers to local food banks and nonprofits in the district.
