Statement on Senate Vote to End Shutdown

"Establishment Democrats tell us over and over that ‘This is not normal.’ They tell us that we are in an authoritarian crisis unlike any this country has ever seen. And yet, they continue to cave to Trump on every single fight they’ve picked with him because they are addicted to the status quo. Yes, the government shutdown is horrible. Yes, it creates real disruptions. But fascism is more disruptive. Illegally kidnapping people off the streets and from their homes is more disruptive. Watching people die because they can’t afford healthcare anymore is more disruptive.

If Democratic leadership actually believed the things they say, they wouldn’t think of giving in to a wannabe tyrant. They are right that America is in crisis. We feel it here in Illinois’ 7th District. We've seen military marches on the Village of Broadview. We've seen Black Hawk helicopters descend onto Chicago apartment complexes. We've seen ICE agents driving around Oak Park looking to ruin someone's life. We see the crisis. And we don’t have the luxury of giving up–as Senate Democrats did today.

Democrats wonder why their approval rating is so low, even as Trump continues his march toward fascism. It’s because the old guard doesn’t represent the interests of the people. Americans are desperate for something to oppose these abuses and instead of acting like a real opposition party, Democrats offer slogans and capitulation, and nothing more. We need people in Congress who will fight, not cave."
